Denison Falls Twice on Day Two at the NFCA Leadoff Classic

Columbus, Ga.- On day two of the NFCA Classic, Denison softball got off to a slow start in game one against No. 23 Berry College, falling to the Vikings 9-0 in six innings. The Big Red would pick up a little bit of momentum in game two against No. 24 Belhaven University, where they gave up just two runs, a tournament low for Belhaven.

Game 1 (Denison 0, Berry 9 (6 Inn.))
From the first pitch the Big Red and Vikings showcased a defensive battle. In the first inning, Alex Longstreth would single and reach second on a passed ball, but was ultimately stranded at the end of the first. Momentum would shift in favor of an early walk, followed by a single that led to an error, placing the runners on second and third, then cashing in the runs with a double to go up 2-0. Berry would continue its offensive push in the fifth, adding two more runs at the top of that inning to go up 4-0. Unfortunately for the Big Red, bats remained cold heading into the sixth inning. The top of the sixth saw a five-run inning from Berry, claiming those five runs off of five hits, and one error from the Big Red.

The Big Red would tally only one hit early on from Longstreth and one walk in the second from Elizabeth Allen. Brooke Surbaugh would go 5.2 innings, claiming four strikeouts, but giving up nine hits and three walks. Leah Gershman would come in for the final out of the game, giving up two hits and two earned runs before recording the final out.

In the top of the fourth, Denison would claim the first point of the game with a solo home run shot to center field from Brooke Surbaugh. Belhaven would look to answer in the bottom of the fourth, but only recorded a hit, keeping the score 1-0, in favor of DenisonThe fifth inning flew by for both teams, with a hit from Carley Melton in the top of the inning and a walk in the bottom from Belhaven, with both teams unable to get those runners home. The Blazers finally found their way onto the scoreboard at the bottom of the sixth inning with a triple and a sacrifice fly to tie the game at one a piece. Belhaven would then follow it up with a solo home run to take the 2-1 lead. Unfortunately for the Big Red unable to find its way on base in the top of the seventh, Denison ultimately fell to the Blazers in a 2-1 decision.
