Softball Closes Out NFCA Leadoff Classic with Sunday Split

Columbus, Ga. - On day three of the NFCA Leadoff Classic, the Denison softball team's bats were hot in their first game against Pomona-Pitzer, picking up their second win, but fell to No. 8 East Texas Baptist in their final game down in Georgia. Three Big Red had multi-RBI's in the win, and Brooke Surbaugh pitched five innings only giving up three hits. Denison returns home after going 2-4 on the weekend, with wins against Stevens and Pomona-Pitzer.

Denison 9, Pomona-Pitzer 1

Denison trailed early on in the first inning, as the Sagehens picked up a run off of a sacrifice fly to go up 1-0. The Big Red would not let that run slip by, as they put up three runs of their own in the bottom half of the first inning, highlighted by a Surbaugh two-run RBI double, and Leilah Ferrari doubled to bring in Surbaugh to go up 3-1. Denison continued their onslaught in the fifth, as they scored three runs thanks to a single from Carley Melton to bring in one, and a double from Indy Workman to cash in two to make it a 7-1 game. Madilyn Moffitt earned her second RBI of the game after a double, and Emerson Seevers effectively ended the game after a single scored Emily Orsini, and the Big Red won in five innings, 5-1.

The Big Red tallied 14 hits, with five recording multi-hit games. Melton went 3-for-3 in her at-bats with an RBI, and Workman, Moffitt, and Surbaugh each recorded two RBI's. Surbaugh pitched a complete game, only giving up three hits with two strikeouts and one earned run.

No. 8 East Texas Baptist 4, Denison 0

Game two was the opposite of the one previous, as the Big Red only rattled off three hits in the game, while the Tigers got up early and added some insurance to cap off a win. East Texas Baptist got off to a hot start, scoring two runs off a single and a double in just the first inning. Carley Melton was able to reach first off on an error throw from the shortstop, but would be left on base to end the inning 2-0 in favor of the Tigers. Moffitt made quick work in the top of the second, striking out one to get out of the top half of the inning, but the Big Red went three up three down in their at-bats. East Texas Baptist added another run in the third inning to go up 3-0, while Leilah Ferrari tried to get things going with a single, but the rally would fall short. The last run of the game came in the fourth, with the Tigers adding another to make it a 4-0 ballgame. Both teams could not generate much offense after, and East Texas Baptist walked away with a 4-0 win at the end of the Leadoff Classic.

Moffitt, Orsini, and Ferrari each recorded a hit, while Denison left four on base throughout the course of the game. Moffitt pitched 6.1 innings, giving up 10 hits and four earned runs while striking out one in 30 batters faced.
