Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Denison Prevails In Rainy Top-20 Matchup Against Messiah, 12-11

Granville, Ohio - In what turned into a game under the lights, the Big Red women's lacrosse team shined the brightest in a win over No. 17 Messiah University, 12-11. Sydney Lavin led Denison with four goals, while also adding an assist. Denison moves to 4-1, while Messiah falls to 3-3 on the season.

The Big Red got off to a slow start, as the Falcons scored three goals in the first five minutes to get things started. The first goal came from Sydney Lavin in the final minute of the first quarter to get Denison on the board, but Messiah fired right back to take a 4-1 advantage entering the second.

Emerson Thompson kicked things off in the second quarter with a goal in the first minute followed up by a man-up goal from Mary Martinson to put the Big Red down by one, 4-3. Lavin's second goal would become the equalizer on a free-position shot, giving Denison their first tie of the game. Messiah answered back, but two quick strikes from MK Barnhart and Thompson gave the Big Red their first lead of the game, 6-5.

At the start of the second half both teams would trade goals, as Madison Goldstein along with Barnhart's second goal of the game kept Denison up by one. Martinson was able to give the Big Red a cushion with a goal, and Lavin completed her hat trick, along with adding her fourth, to give Denison a four-goal advantage. The Falcons would stop the bleeding with a goal of their own, but Denison would lead heading into the fourth up 11-8.

Messiah would not let the Big Red lead last long, as they scored three consecutive goals in the fourth to knot the game at 11. With Denison needing a shot, Thompson came up big on the defensive end, causing a turnover that turned into a goal from Finlay Harmon to give Denison the slight one-goal advantage. The Big Red defense stepped up once again, as Martinson caused a turnover in the final minutes, and final turnover from the Falcons gave Denison ample time to run out the clock and take home a 12-11 victory in the rain.
