Denison Fends Off Late Push From Wooster For Pivotal Conference Win

Wooster, Ohio - Big nights from Aidan King and Luke Salkowski propel Denison to a crucial 72-67 conference win at The College of Wooster. Four Big Red scored in double figures en route in their penultimate matchup. Denison improves to 16-8 overall and 11-4 in conference play, while Wooster drops to 8-16 overall and 5-10 in conference play.

First Half: The Big Red got into a rhythm heading into the first media timeout up 9-3, with seven points coming from Owen Giannoulias. With under 12 minutes to go, Aidan King started to get hot from behind the arc, as he hit back-to-back three-pointers to increase the lead to 12, 21-9. Kellon Smith started to get involved with four-straight points to bring the lead to 25-15, and Nick Heath followed up with five of his own to go up 30-19 with under five minutes to play in the half. King would continue his strong first half with his third three-pointer, and Smith would cap off the high-scoring opening half with a 40-31 lead. The Big Red shot 47.1% from the field and hit six three-pointers. They out-rebounded the Fighting Scots 6-0 on the offensive glass, and produced 18 points off the bench. King led all scorers with 13, while Giannoulias tallied seven.

Second Half: Smith built on his bucket at the end of the first half into the second, scoring four points along with a couple free throws from Liam Taylor to lead back into double-digits 46-34. Wooster would start to claw its way back, as a 10-4 run found themselves down two possessions heading into the second media timeout, 54-49. The Scots kept the attack up, and took a two point lead before a six-point swing with three's from Samson Zack and Heath put the Big Red up 62-58 with under five minutes to go. Wooster would knot things up at 64, but Luke Salkowski would go on a 4-0 run himself capped off with a ferocious slam to go up 68-64 with a minute to go. A Wooster three would bring the game within one, but a pair of free throws from Smith would make it a three-point game, and Salkowski came in with a big time inbounds steal to seal a massive conference win on the road, 72-67.
