Big Red Drop Conference Clash Against DePauw

Granville, Ohio - In a battle of conference heavyweights, the DePauw Tigers were able to split the season series against the Denison Big Red in a midweek conference contest, 83-79. DePauw improves to 16-7 overall and 9-5 in the conference, while Denison drops to 14-8 and 9-4 in conference play.

First Half: Both teams came out the gates hot, as Nick Heath got things started with a three-pointer followed by a Liam Taylor jumper to go up 5-2 to start out the game. It would be a back-and-forth affair throughout most of the first half, with the Tigers going up by as much as five with 13 minutes to go. Denison would knot it back at 24 a piece thanks to a Samson Zack three and another Taylor jumper, but the Tigers would respond and another multitude of lead changes would ensue. After a pair of Ellis Appiah free throws, the Big Red would go up 43-39 with under two minutes to go, but the Tigers would go on a 4-0 to close out the half and tie things up, 43-43. DePauw led in points in the paint with 24 compared to Denison's eight. The Big Red did get solid contributions off the bench, netting 12 points.

Second Half: The Tigers came out on an 8-2 run to go up 51-45 in the first three minutes of the second half. Owen Giannoulias was able to stop some of the bleeding, scoring six straight points for the Big Red to cut the lead within four with 15 minutes to go. DePauw would keep the lead until the eight minute mark, where Giannoulias was able to tie the game with a put back layup to make it 66-66. Both teams would again trade baskets with each other, and an Appiah three-pointer would hand the Big Red a one-point lead with five minutes remaining. The Tigers went back up 76-73, then a Kellon Smith triple would tie the game up once again, but a three-pointer and late free throws would seal the game up for the Tigers, 83-79. There were 16 lead changes and 13 times the game was tied throughout the contest. The Big Red finished with 28 points in the paint.
