Big Red Fend Off Late Tiger Run for Crucial Conference Win

Granville, Ohio - Despite a late rally from Wittenberg, Denison comes away with their fourth conference win of the season, bouncing back after their first loss on Wednesday at Wabash. Denison improves to 9-5 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while Wittenberg falls to 10-4 and 3-2.

First Half: The Big Red knocked down shots early and often, as Jack Steinbach and Nick Heath hit triples to go up 15-6. The lead would be double digits for most of the way, but Wittenberg would hit a three to cut the deficit to eight to go into the second half, 35-28. The Big Red shot 36.4% from deep and 48.1% from the field, and got key contributions from Kellon Smith who had 10 in the first half and Heath with seven.

Second Half: Wittenberg would start to pick up the intensity and connect on some big shots, as the Tigers took the lead 54-53 with eight minutes to go. The Big Red would not falter, as they hit some clutch shots of their own as Smith had a clutch and-one and Liam Taylor followed it up with a bucket of his own to go up 60-54 with under five minutes to go. The Tigers cut the deficit to two, then with 2:33 left to go Jack Steinbach hit a big-time three to go up 65-60. It would stay a two-possession game down the stretch, and Ellis Appiah capitalized the win with a ferocious dunk to give the Big Red their fourth conference win of the season, 70-65.
