Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Drops Hard Fought Contest With #16 Carnegie Mellon

Granville, Ohio - The Denison's women's soccer team dropped a tough loss to #16 Carnegie Mellon 2-1. Isabella Guzman was able to get the Big Red on the board with a penalty kick goal in the final minutes, but the Tartans were resilient and answered right back to win. Carnegie Mellon improves to 3-1 while Denison falls to 2-2.

The first half was a tight defensive battle, as despite Carnegie Mellon leading in shots 6-4 and both teams getting corner kick opportunities, no one could find the back of the net.

The second half was a different story, as Carnegie Mellon's Audrey Bianco struck first to make it 1-0 at the 52nd minute mark.

Another scoring drought took place, until a foul on Carnegie Mellon's Thea Spellmeyer in the box set up a penalty kick opportunity for the Big Red. Isabella Guzman lined up for the penalty shot, and took advantage, slipping by the goalkeeper's fingers and squeaking inside the left post to score and make it a 1-1 game at the 82nd minute.

The tie game would not last long, as just a minute later Caroline Klauder rifled a shot off of a blocked shot from Molly Noga to give the Tartans a 2-1 lead and would hold on to win the match.

Carnegie Mellon out-shot the Big Red 17-13 and also had nine shots on target compared to Denison's five. Avery Butler, Mattie Mielke, and Guzman were able to get multiple shots off, and Emily Stackhouse picked up the only yellow card of the day, and Noga saved seven shots on the day.

Up Next for the Big Red

The Big Red will stay at home next Saturday, September 13, when they take on Centre College at 1 pm at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium.
