Wooster, Ohio- The Denison field hockey team ended a two-game goal drought after junior attacker Emma Gebhart recorded a career high, five of the Big Red's six goals in a dominant 6-1 win over the College of Wooster. Denison moves to 3-5 for the season and 2-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play, while the Fighting Scots move to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play.Â
The Big Red got on the board early, capitalizing on its first penalty corner of the day. Defender Tabitha Chandler found teammate Helen Breen, who shot a rocket just inside the striking circle for goal number one. The Fighting Scots would knot the game at one goal at the 11th minute mark, but would be held to just that goal for the remainder of the game.
Gebhart would help Denison pull away in the second quarter, putting in two goals in the second quarter, giving the Big Red a 3-1 lead heading into the half. Just five minutes into the second half, Bella Thoms sent a quick ball just outside of the circle, and Gebhart found the perfect position to deflect it in just outside the post of the Fighting Scots cage. She would earn her final two goals of the day off a rebounded shot in the third quarter, and in the fourth quarter, she tapped in a loose ball to give Denison a definitive 6-1 victory.Â
Denison outshot Wooster 35-5 and held a 13-2 edge in penalty corners. Therese Lucian finished the day with three saves, while Cate Barkdoll and Noa Kauffman split time in the cage for the College of Wooster and tallied a total of 18 saves.
