Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Denison Field Hockey Comes Up Short Against #11 Shenandoah

Granville, Ohio- The Big Red field hockey team comes up short in its 2-1 overtime loss to No. 11 Shenandoah University. Denison falls to 0-2 after the opening weekend while the Hornets improve to 2-0 for the season.

From the jump, the Big Red put the pressure on the Hornets, forcing a penalty corner in the opening minute of play. Shenandoah would record its first penalty corner of the game just two minutes later, but Denison's backline collapsed quickly, shutting down the Hornet's offensive look.

After over nine minutes of play, Denison found an open patch of the field and rushed Shenandoah's backline. With numbers and a driving effort by Reilly Desmond, Lila Smith stepped in front of the cage and deflected the ball into the back of the Hornets' cage to put the Big Red up by one.

Just before the half, Shenandoah turned up its offensive intensity, forcing its second penalty corner of the game. Denison managed to stop the initial entry, but struggled to clear the ball out of the striking circle, giving the Hornets their best look of the day; fortunately for the Big Red, Megan Edwards got her stick down just before the ball crossed the cage's mouth.

With six minutes left in the third period, Shenandoah knotted the game up at one apiece off a well-executed penalty corner piece, and ultimately would force the two teams into overtime. Despite a solid look at goal just one minute into the game, a quick change of field by Shenandoah led to a fast break to its offensive end, resulting in the game-winning goal by Reagan Flory, who gathered a pass from Claudia Lenahan.

The Hornets finished the matchup with a 10-3 penalty corner advantage; however, they only got off five shots, in comparison to the Big Red's two shots.
