Granville, Ohio- The No. 2 Denison Big Red baseball team squared off against the Belhaven Blazers on Saturday for a spot in the program's first-ever College World Series. After a dominant 17-3 victory in game one, Denison only needed to win one game on Saturday to etch their name in the Big Red record books. Denison, playing as the visitor on their own turf, got active early to pull away in a 14-1 decision. On the weekend, Denison outscored Belhaven 31-4. The Big Red bring home hardware as Super Regional Champions and will travel up to Eastlake, Ohio, next week for the College World Series.
Up Next: The Big Red will take to Eastlake to play in the College World Series. The eight Super Regional Champions will be re-seeded into two pods of four. Each pod will play in a double-elimination tournament to earn a spot in the National Championship. The World Series is hosted by the North Coast Athletic Conference and will take place from May 30-June 5.
Super Regional Game Two (Denison 14, Belhaven 1)
As friends, family, and alumni packed the stands at Big Red Field, the Denison squad was able to carry over the powerful momentum from Friday's game into championship Saturday. While in their home dugout, the Big Red kicked things off in the batters' box as the visiting team. Following a Jack Lutte double down the left field line, Erik Sundgren launched his first of three home runs over the right field wall, electrifying the Big Red dugout and taking an early 2-0 lead. Cade Nowik and Max Fishbein each picked up an RBI to move the needle to 4-0.
Belhaven responded in the bottom of the first with a run of their own, but this would be the only time that the Blazers would touch home plate in game two. In the top of the second, Lutte reached after being hit by a pitch. With one down and a runner on first, Sundgren crushed a ball over the right center wall for his second homer of the day. As Sundgren turned the corner heading home, he let a celebratory shrug, followed by a swarm of chaos in the dugout, seemingly letting the Big Red know that he was not finished with the already stellar performance. Andrew Fazio drew a walk with bases loaded to pick up an RBI and Jake Blozy used his speed to take home on a passed ball.
After a lackluster second and third inning, the Big Red found themselves again with bases juiced in the top of the fourth inning. A single from Andrew Fazio drove in a run and a drawn walk from Eron Vega took the Big Red to a 10-1 lead.
After a three-up, three-down, bottom of the fourth, Jake Blozy continued his remarkable Super Regional performance with an RBI single to score Eric Colaco.
With an 11-1 lead, the top of the order continued to punish the Blazers in the sixth inning. Jack Lutte sent another double down the line to score Alex Vasquez. With Lutte on yet again, Erik Sundgren was able to leave his final mark of the season at The Farm. Sundgren took a pitch over the center field wall, marking his third homer of the day and plating two more runs for Denison. Sundgren tied his own record for most homers in a single game (Spalding 3/8/25). This would mark the final runs for either team in the game.
The Big Red offense had multiple players with high octane performances. Sundgren's three homers added six RBIs to his already high total. The trio of Sundgren, Colaco, and Blozy added three hits apiece. Fazio, Nowik, and Lutte added two hits. In total, the Big Red collected 18 hits on the day.
Peter Lemke got the start for the Big Red. Lemke lasted 7.0 innings, struck out three, and gave up the lone run. Sophomore Jack Rollo got an inning out of the bullpen in relief. He allowed one hit and struck out one. In the final inning, junior righty Will Rettig took the mound. The Blazers were able to put two runners on. After a fielder's choice recorded the first out, Rettig delivered a beautiful strike three to move Belhaven to their final out of the season. In storybook fashion, Rettig drew a fly ball out to left field. As Colaco camped under it to record the final out, the Big Red stormed the field in celebration of their first World Series berth.Â
