Granville, Ohio — The Denison softball team swept Friday evening's North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader against Oberlin, notching a 3-0 win in game one before cruising to an 8-0 run-rule victory in game two on senior day. With the sweep, the Big Red improve to 19-10 overall and 9-1 in NCAC play.
Game 1: (Denison 3, Oberlin 0)
After four scoreless innings, Denison broke through in the fifth thanks to Giavanna Gangi, who delivered an RBI single and advanced to second on an error and obstruction, allowing Jacqui Abogado to score the game's first run. Gangi later crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make it 2-0, and in the sixth, Indy Workman added a solo homer to left field, her first of the season, to give the Big Red a three-run cushion.
Brooke Surbaugh was dominant in the circle, tossing a shutout one-hitter. The junior right-hander struck out two and walked just one across seven shutout innings, needing only 79 pitches to earn the win and improve to 8-7 on the season.
Game 2: (Denison 8, Oberlin 0)
Denison continued its momentum in game two, opening the scoring in the third inning when Jacqui Abogado doubled to right field to drive in Annabelle Calderon.
Leilah Ferrari extended the lead with an inside-the-park home run in the fourth, plating Emily Orsini for a 3-0 advantage. The Big Red added one more in the fifth on an RBI single from Gangi before exploding for four runs in the sixth—capitalizing on two Oberlin errors, a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, and a pair of wild pitches to end the game early.
Sydney Silverstein was lights-out in the circle, tossing a complete-game three-hit shutout. The senior racked up six strikeouts, didn't allow a walk, and needed just 53 pitches over six efficient innings to move to 8-3 on the year.
Ferrari led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Abogado and Gangi each chipped in an RBI, while Calderon reached base three times and drove in a run as well.
