Big Red Powers Past Marietta, Break Records in Tuesday Sweep

Marietta, Ohio — The Denison softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader on the road at Marietta College on Tuesday evening, earning a 6-3 win in game one before cruising to a 13-0 run-rule victory in game two. With the sweep, the Big Red improve to 21-10 on the season.

Game 1: (Denison 6, Marietta 3)

Denison opened the scoring in the second inning with a solo home run from Brooke Surbaugh to left center—the 34th team home run of the season, setting a new single-season program record. After Marietta tied the game in the bottom half, the Big Red responded in the third with a two-run blast from Annabelle Calderon. The senior's historic swing not only gave Denison a 3-1 lead but also made her the program's career leader in total bases, just games after becoming Denison's all-time doubles leader.

Jacqui Abogado added a solo homer in the fourth to make it 4-1, and after Marietta pulled one back in the fifth, Denison extended its lead again with an RBI single from Natalie Omahen in the sixth. Liana Su solidified the win with her first collegiate home run in the seventh.

Brooke Surbaugh (W, 9-7) earned the win in the circle, going 4.1 innings and allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Madilyn Moffitt came on in relief to secure the save—her second of the season—tossing 2.2 innings while giving up one run on three hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

Game 2: (Denison 13, Marietta 0) - 5 innings

The Big Red wasted no time in game two, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a fielder's choice RBI from Emily Orsini. Denison exploded for five runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from Madilyn Moffitt and a series of Marietta errors that allowed the Big Red to capitalize.

Denison continued its offensive barrage with three more runs in the fourth—Orsini brought home two more on a fielder's choice, and Brianna Gonzalez added an RBI single. The Big Red wrapped things up with a four-run fifth, getting RBIs from Calderon, Abogado, Ferrari, and Gonzalez to lock in the run-rule victory.

Calderon led the offensive charge throughout the day, finishing with four hits, four RBIs, and five runs scored. Orsini drove in four runs in game two, while Gonzalez tallied three RBIs. Abogado, Moffitt, and Su each homered in a dominant team effort.

In the circle, Sydney Silverstein was lights-out, tossing a five-inning shutout while allowing just five hits. The sophomore right-hander struck out two, walked none, and needed only 53 pitches to improve to 10-3 on the season.
