Big Red Bats Erupt as Denison Sweeps Kenyon in NCAC Doubleheader

Gambier, Ohio — The Denison softball team swept Saturday afternoon's North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Kenyon, earning a 4-1 win in game one before erupting for a 12-3 victory in game two. With the sweep, the Big Red improve to 17-10 overall and 7-1 in NCAC play.

Game 1: (Denison 4, Kenyon 1)

After Kenyon struck first with an RBI single in the opening inning, Denison responded in the second when Carley Melton reached on an error in right field, allowing Leilah Ferrari to score and tie the game at 1-1.

The Big Red took control from there, taking the lead in the fourth inning as Annabelle Calderon singled to right, driving in Indy Workman. Denison added two more in the fifth—first on an RBI single up the middle from Brooke Surbaugh, then capitalizing on a Kenyon error to bring home another unearned run.

Brooke Surbaugh led Denison at the plate in game one, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Leilah Ferrari added a 2-for-4 performance with a double and a run scored, while Annabelle Calderon chipped in with a hit, an RBI, and a walk to help the Big Red build momentum early in the doubleheader.

Game 2: (Denison 12, Kenyon 3)

Kenyon jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, but Denison quickly turned the tide and delivered a dominant performance, highlighted by a nine-run fifth inning.

Emily Orsini put the Big Red on the board in the second with an RBI single, and in the fifth, Giavanna Gangi launched a three-run homer to left center, giving Denison a 4-3 lead. That was just the beginning—Leilah Ferrari scored on a wild pitch, and Indy Workman brought in another run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Annabelle Calderon kept the momentum going with a two-run double to right, and later scored on a wild pitch. Jacqui Abogado capped the explosive inning with an RBI single up the middle, giving Denison a commanding 10-3 lead.

The Big Red added two more in the sixth, including an RBI single from Abogado and another RBI from Calderon, who finished the day with four total RBIs.

Annabelle Calderon paced the Big Red offense in game two, going 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs, and two walks. Jacqui Abogado followed with a 3-for-5 effort, driving in two runs and anchoring the middle of the lineup. Giavanna Gangi delivered the biggest swing of the game, launching a three-run homer as part of her three-RBI day.
