Oberlin, OH- The No. 4 Denison Big Red baseball squad traveled to Oberlin College to continue their journey through the NCAC. The Big Red look to continue a 10-game win streak against the Yeomen and extend the 17-5 all-time series lead. In game one, Denison earned a gritty 4-0 victory. Later in game two, the offense exploded, carrying the Big Red to a 10-0 victory in 7.0 innings.
Up Next: Denison will return to Granville and take on fellow Division III blue blood, Marietta, in a Sunday doubleheader.
Game 1(Denison 4, Oberlin 0)
The Big Red defense highlighted the shutout victory over Oberlin. Senior righty Nick Falter collected his eighth win of the year, moving his record to 8-0 on the year. Falter went 8.0 innings on the bump, striking out 14 batters and allowing just two hits. Junior righty Will Rettig made a rare appearance out of the bullpen, slamming the door shut in the ninth inning and recording two strikeouts to send the Big Red into game two with a victory.
In the box, Denison was able to tack on their first run of the day in the fifth inning following a sacrifice fly by Jack Lutte. Later in the eighth, Jake Blozy recorded a bunt for a hit to score Max Fishbein. Later in the inning, a powerful double down the left field line by Cade Nowik scored Blozy. In the final frame, Erik Sundgren drove in Alex Vasquez to score the final run of game 1. This RBI marks Sundgren's 52nd of the year, moving him to second in the nation across Divison III.
The offense was led by Nowik and Blozy, going 2-4 at the dish. In the field, the defense recorded zero errors.
Game 2 (Denison 10, Oberlin 0) 7 Innings
The defense stayed hot while the offense found its spark in game two.
Peter Lemke picked up his fifth win of the year in a 6.0 inning performance. Lemke allowed just two baserunners on the bump.
Sam Larson closed the game by striking out the only three batters that he faced to secure the game two win. Between the two sophomore arms, eight Oberlin batters were retired via strikeout and zero walks were recorded.
The offense found its groove in the box during the second and third innings. Through the two innings, the Big Red posted nine runs courtesy of a pair of RBIs from Jack Steel and Cade Nowik. Jake Blozy, Jack Lutte, Alex Vasquez, and Cade Nowik took advantage of errors by the Yeomen and collected the remaining runs. Additionally, Carson Herman drove in his fourth RBI of the season.
The defense was perfect in the field, recording zero errors. With the series sweep, the Big Red move to 20-4 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
