No. 21 Denison Women’s Lacrosse Edges Christopher Newport in Thrilling 12-11 Victory

Newport News, Va. – The No. 18 Denison women's lacrosse team secured its sixth victory with a thrilling 12-11 win over Christopher Newport University. The Big Red improved to 6-2 on the season, while CNU fell to 7-3.

It was a back-and-forth contest from the start, with the Captains taking an early lead in the first quarter. The Captains opened the scoring at 14:20, but Denison quickly responded with a pair of goals by Anna DeVuono, giving the Big Red a 2-1 advantage. CNU answered with an unassisted goal to tie the game, but Denison's DeVuono struck again to give her team a 3-2 lead.

The two teams traded goals throughout the remainder of the first quarter, with the Captains taking a slim 4-3 lead. The second quarter was no different, with the teams continuing to exchange scoring runs. Mary Martinson tied the game early in the second and then assisted on a goal by Emersen Thompson to put the Big Red ahead. CNU answered with a goal to tied the game, 6-6 going into halftime

Denison came out strong after halftime, dominating the third quarter 5-2 to take an 11-8 lead heading into the final period. Anna DeVuono and Mary Martinson both found the back of the net, while Caroline Brooks, Bridget Sheehy, and Sophie Davenport added to the offensive barrage. Despite a late push from the Captains, who pulled to within one goal after scoring three goals in the fourth quarter, Denison held on for the 12-11 victory.

The Big Red dominated in draw controls, winning 18 to the Captain's 10. The team successfully converted 13 of 15 clear attempts, including a perfect 8-for-8 in the second and third quarters.

DeVuono was a standout for Denison, finishing with four goals and an assist, while Martinson added three goals and two assists. The offense also saw contributions from Caroline Brooks, Hana Asghari, and Grayson O'Marra, each of whom scored one goal.

In goal, Julianne Henigan recorded three saves, and her teammates Cate Dannahey and Kaylyn Kirrane added one save each in relief.
