Delphi, Ohio - The Denison softball team traveled to Cincinnati to face Mount St. Joseph in a non-conference doubleheader. Denison secured a 9-3 win in game one, utilizing a balanced offensive attack and strong pitching. However, in game two, Mount St. Joseph responded with a 7-2 victory, capitalizing on early runs and limiting The Big Red's offensive production. The split left Denison with a 10-7 overall record and the Lions 12-6.
Game 1: (Denison 9, Mount St. Joseph 3)
Mount St. Joseph jumped to a 2-0 lead in the 4th, but Big Red answered in the 5th. Leilah Ferrari doubled, followed by Carley Melton's RBI single. Annabelle Calderon then doubled, and Maddy Moffitt added an RBI single, giving Denison a 3-2 lead. After Mount St. Joseph tied it at 3-3 with a solo homer in the 5th, Denison added six more runs in the 6th and 7th. Indy Workman drove in two runs, and Brooke Surbaugh, Giavanna Gangi, and Emily Orsini all added RBIs in the 7th, securing the 9-3 win. The Big Red finished with nine hits, led by Melton and Moffitt. Brooke Surbaugh pitched five innings for the win, allowing three earned runs. Moffitt closed with two scoreless innings.
Game 2: (Mount St. Joseph 7, Denison 2)
In game two, Mount St. Joseph jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the 3rd inning, highlighted by a solo homer and an RBI double in the 4th. Denison got on the board in the 4th when Moffitt singled to right-center to score Workman. The Lions responded quickly with three more runs in the 4th, including a two-RBI double, pushing the score to 7-1. The Big Red answered with a solo homer from Moffitt in the 7th, but it wasn't enough to close the gap, as the Lions held on for a 7-2 win. Denison managed four hits in the game, with Moffitt contributing two of them, including the home run.
