Granville, Ohio- The Denison University women's lacrosse team fell short of a comeback win after losing to the University of Mary Washington 13-11 at home. The Eagles stopped the Big Red's five-game winning streak in its tracks, giving Denison just its third loss of the season. The Big Red dropped to 5-3 for the season, while Mary Washington improved to 10-1.
Denison scored early in the first period, first off the quick release of
Caroline Brooks, followed by another unassisted goal by
Anna DeVuono, giving the Big Red a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately for Denison, Mary Washington was ready for its tough competition and found the back of Denison's net four times in the first quarter to put the Eagles up 4-2.
In the second quarter, Mary Washington strung a series of collected draw controls and goals to extend their lead over Denison by as many as five. Not unfamiliar with coming from behind, the Big Red put together an intense final minute of the half to cut the Eagles to three.Â
Down 8-5 at the start of the second half, Denison managed to ramp up its offense, putting in three goals to tie the game at eight apiece with two minutes left in the third. Unfortunately for the Big Red, with every goal Denison put away, the Eagles would have an answer, resulting in a four-goal lead with just under four left in regulation. Despite being down by four, Denison continued to claw its way back into the game, and in the final 90 seconds of the game, the Big Red's
Sydney Lavin and
Emersen Thompson scored to put Denison within two. Time however, was not in favor of the Big Red, and the two-goal deficit (13-11) was ultimately too much for the Big Red to make up.
Though Denison held a 16-11 edge over Mary Washington in draw controls, the Eagles produced a more efficient offense once a draw control was won. The Eagles finished the night with 16 of its 28 shots on goal, while the Big Red were just 11 for 30. Mary Washington defensively put a lot of pressure on Denison, forcing eight of the Big Red's 14 turnovers.
Eight players scored for Denison in their 13-11 loss to Mary Washington. Brooks,
Sophie Davenport, and
Mary Martinson each scored twice.
Bridget Sheehy,
Addie Clift, DeVuono, Lavin, and Thompson each tacked on one apiece. Martinson grabbed seven draw controls for the Big Red, while Sheehy collected five. On the defensive end, Lavin led the team in caused turnovers with two of the team's seven.Â
