Granville, Ohio- The No. 18 Denison University opened North Coast Athletic Conference play with a dominant 18-4 victory over Oberlin College. The Big Red ended a three-game losing skid with this win and moved to 4-4 for the seasons and 1-0 in NCAC play, while the Yeomen dropped to 6-2, and 0-1 in conference play.
Led by the scoring duo of
Tommy Quinson and
Macky Peck, the Denison Big Red rolled to its first NCAC victory of the season. Three minutes into the game, Quinson scored a solo shot to put the Big Red up 1-0, four minutes later,
Collin Murphy whipped a ball past the Yeomen's goalie to put Denison up 2-0. The Big Red would eventually score three more goals by Peck and
Kevin Berutich to give Denison a 5-1 lead with three quarters left to play in the game.
In the second quarter, the Big Red did give up two goals but put in another four for a 9-3 lead heading into halftime. By the half, Denison had five different goal scores and already shot the Yeomen 31-13. After halftime, the Big Red kept its foot on the gas pedal, scoring another nine goals across the final two quarters.
Denison's offensive dominance had much to do with their ability to move the ball and find the open man. 12 of the Big Red's 18 goals had an assist attached to it, making today's win over the Yeomen a real team effort.
Leading the Big Red to victory was Quinson and Peck. Quinson tallied four goals and dished out three assists, grabbed six ground balls, and caused one turnover. Peck finished the day with four goals and one assist. Just behind the scoring pair was Berutich, who scored three goals and had one assist. Murphy,
Michael Cassidy, and
Jack Hines each tallied two goals, and first-year
Luca Sanders scored his first career goal as a Big Red.
Denison held an edge over Oberlin in shots, 56-23, ground balls (44-28), and faceoffs, winning 16 of the 24 faceoffs. On defense, the Big Red shut down the Yeomen on extra-man opportunities and held Oberlin to just nine successful clear attempts, causing 13 turnovers across regulation.Â
Andrew Albert earned today's win for the Big Red after tallying eight saves. Also spending some time in net for Denison was sophomore
Brant Satterly. Oberlin's Jake Pillsbury completed the afternoon in goal for Oberlin with 11 saves.
