Redlands, Calif.- Securing its fifth win in a row, the No. 18 Denison women's lacrosse team defeated the University of Redlands handily thanks to a big second-half scoring spree. The Big Red improved to 5-2 for the season, while the Bulldogs dropped to 6-2.
In its usual fashion, Denison scored first, four minutes into the first quarter, off a free position shot made by junior
Mary Martinson. Redlands would answer just a few minutes later, tying the game at one with seven left in the quarter. At the three-minute mark, the Big Red found a gap in the defense and scored back-to-back goals by
Sophie Davenport and
Madison Goldstein, giving Denison a 3-1 lead. In the second quarter, the two teams traded goals, keeping the game within reach for the Bulldogs despite the three-goal deficit they faced heading into halftime.
Much like the day before, Denison had a dominant third quarter, scoring eight goals and giving up just two on the other end. With a double-digit lead, the Big Red didn't let up in the fourth quarter, scoring four more goals while shutting down its opponent's ability to run its offense, resulting in just one more goal in the fourth, bringing the Bulldogs total to eight.
Denison outshot Redlands 38-21 and were 3-for-3 in powerplay opportunities. The Big Red's offense started with the 18 draw controls throughout the game, and between the second and third quarter, Denison was 8-for-8 in clear attempts, which proved to be a problem for Redlands defense throughout the match.Â
Anna DeVuono and
Mary Martinson led the Big Red's scoring efforts with four goals; Martinson grabbed six ground balls and collected 12 of Denison's 18 draw controls.
Addie Clift put in three goals, notched an assist, and was one of four players to cause two turnovers. Rounding out the multi-goal scorers are
Grayson O'Marra and
Madison Goldstein, who added two more goals throughout the evening matchup. In total, ten different members scored;
Bridget Sheehy found a teammate five times, facilitating a fourth of those goals.
Julianne Henigan started in goal for the Big Red, tallying two saves, followed by
Cate Dannahey and
Kaylyn Kirrane, who recorded one save. In goal for the Bulldogs was Courtney Myers, who finished the evening with 11 saves.
