Carlisle, Pa.- In a road test that came down to the final minute, the No. 19 Denison women's lacrosse team fell 9-8 to Dickinson on Sunday afternoon. Despite an incredible effort by
Anna DeVuono, the Big Red fall to 0-2 on the season.
Just shy of her career mark, DeVuono notched four goals in the low-scoring affair. The senior was aided by
Maddie Chase,
Addie Clift,
Mary Martinson, and
MK Barnhart, who all scored a goal apiece. With a pair of assists,
Bridget Sheehy joined in on the offensive effort.
Second-year keeper Julianna Henigan earned the start in goal, and collected 11 saves through a complete 60 minutes. This marks the second-straight game, and third of her career, that Henigan has record double-digits stops.
The Big Red came out hot, scoring the first goal just 49 seconds into the game. Off a sneaky pass from Sheehy, Martinson put Denison on the board, 1-0. Dickinson responded minutes later, but the Big Red put on a show with three goals in less than a
minute to take a commanding 4-1 lead.
Three minutes after the Red Devils scored the equalizer, it was Sheehy again who connected with DeVuono, to reclaim the lead. Denison maintained control of the game through the halftime buzzer, heading into the locker room up 5-4.
It was the Red Devils who set the tone in the second half, scoring three unanswered goals to go up 7-5. A power-play goal from Barnhart ended the Big Red drought, cutting the deficit to one. At 9:57,
Liz Hinton scooped a ground ball before looking upfield to
find Chase on the wing of the eight. Flying downfield, Barnhart charged straight to the cage to score off the pass from Chase.
After the two teams swapped goals, DeVuono weaved through five Red Devils to score the equalizer at the 6:24 mark. Tied 8-8, it was all Dickinson in the final minutes before they notched the go-ahead goal with 45 seconds remaining.
