Granville, Ohio - Following a huge upset over the 12th-ranked Calvin Knights, the Big Red men's basketball team took that momentum into Saturday night, as they defeated the Alma Scots 88-66 behind seven three-pointers from
Nick Heath. The Big Red improve to 2-0, while the Scots fall to 0-2
Denison got off to a hot 9-2 start behind baskets from Kellon Smith and Aidan King. The Big Red lead increased to 15 with 10:48 to go in the first half thanks to Heath's first two threes of the night.
The Scots would fight their way back, however, only trailing 35-30 with 1:17 left in the first half, but a tip-in and free throw from Smith would give the Big Red a 38-30 advantage going into the half.
The Big Red shot 45.5% in the first half, and scored eight points off turnovers. They held Alma to 18.2% three-point shooting. Smith totaled 10 points, while Heath added eight.
The second half started out with a bang, as Heath hit another pair of threes, and Trevor Reed slammed home a transition dunk en route to a 10-3 run to put the Big Red up 48-33. Reed finished his night with 12 points and eight rebounds, starting his season off with back-to-back games in double figures.
Denison went on another big run, this time a 13-0 run that would be sparked from five-straight points from Heath and buckets by Liam Taylor and Samson Zack. Zack was a force on the glass, grabbing eight rebounds to go along with his eight points.
The lead would get up to as much as 26 down the stretch, and the Big Red ran away with a Big Red Madness win in Livingston Gymnasium, 88-66.
Denison shot 47.1%, a big improvement from their game the previous day, where they shot 35.5% in their win against Calvin. They held a 14-4 advantage in points off turnovers in the second half, and 12-3 in second chance points.
