Greencastle, Ind. — The Denison women's soccer team is heading to the NCAC Championship after a gritty 1-0 victory over DePauw on Thursday night at Reavis Stadium.
The Big Red struck early, breaking through in the sixth minute when junior Mara McGlone headed home a perfectly placed corner kick from junior Mattie Mielke, giving Denison the early lead.
From there, Denison's defense took control. Behind a composed back line and sharp goalkeeping, the Big Red stifled DePauw's attack, holding the Tigers to only four shots on goal. Denison finished with a 14-9 edge in total shots and a 7-4 advantage in saves.
Neither team found the net in the second half, as Denison held firm to secure its ninth win of the season and its fourth shutout in the last six matches.
With the win, Denison improves to 9-4-5 and advances to the NCAC Championship match this Sunday, where the Big Red will face newly joined conference member John Carroll with a chance to claim the NCAC title and an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
