Denison Rumbles Past Oberlin, 62-9

Granville, Ohio - Coming off a tough loss to nationally-ranked DePauw, Denison looked to bounce back against the Oberlin Yeomen, and they did so in a big way, cruising their way to a 62-9 victory with help from all phases. Denison improves to 5-3 and 4-2 in the conference, while Oberlin falls to 0-8 and 0-6 in conference play.

Denison forced a turnover on downs on the first drive for the Yeomen, and then used a nine-play, 62-yard drive that ended in a 19-yard pass and catch to Logan Yater for the game's first score to make it 7-0.

On the next ensuing drive, the Big Red could not convert on fourth down, setting up Oberlin on Denison's 25-yard line. They would march it all the way inside the Big Red 10, but a clutch third-down interception by Nick Pellicciotta halted the Yeomen's scoring attempt to end the first quarter.

Denison would capitalize on the turnover, as Tyler Green whipped it over to his favorite target in Grayson Kerscher for a 34-yard touchdown to make it 14-0.

The potent Big Red defense would stuff Oberlin once again, forcing a three-and-out, and a three-play, 71-yard drive capped off by first-year Mikey Malone on a 49-yard run to give the Big Red a 21-0 lead. It was Malone's first score of his career.

On the next Yeomen possession, they used a big 66-yard gain to get inside the Denison 10-yard line. After a couple of crucial stops, defensive lineman Ben Perin came up with the big-time sack to set up a fourth down, in which Oberlin would kick a 33-yard field goal for their first points of the game to go down 21-3.

Denison would respond, as Green found Kerscher once again, this time for a 65-yard score to get Kerscher over the 100-yard mark for the fifth time this season, and his third-straight two-touchdown game.

Oberlin would come back with a passing touchdown of their own, but the extra point was blocked, making the score 28-9 with 43 seconds left in the half. In the same situation Denison was in last week in the closing seconds of the half, Green and Kerscher connected for a third time for a 42-yard touchdown with three seconds left in the first half to make it 35-9 going into halftime.

At the start of the second half, Oberlin's opening drive resulted in a three-and-out. The Big Red would score once again on the short four-play, 17-yard drive that ended in a jump ball touchdown from Green to AJ Winders, his first receiving touchdown of the season.

After a Yeomen punt, Malone would trot in for his second score of the day, this time on a speed option, to put the Big Red up 48-9.

Both teams would trade punts, and the Big Red would score once again on a seven-yard run from running back Blayton Reid to extend the lead to 55-9. It was Reid's sixth touchdown of the season.

With 3:14 left in the fourth quarter, Oberlin threw an interception to defensive lineman Flo Feldman, and set up Denison in Yeomen territory.

The final scoring output of the day went to first-year running back Ben DeCore, who broke a few tackles to run it in for a 24-yard score, and it would be the final, 62-9.

The Big Red recorded 26 first downs and had 8.6 yards per play. Green inches closer to the record books, as his 24 touchdowns in a season are tied for third, and his 2,613 yards currently rank fourth for most in a season.
