Denison Defense Shines in 28-7 Win over Wooster

Wooster, Ohio - With an opportunity to jump a spot in the conference standings, the Big Red tallied their third win of the season with a 28-7 triumph over the Wooster Fighting Scots. Following the result, Denison now holds a record of 3-2, while Wooster falls to .500 at 3-3.

The first quarter was a tale of dueling defenses. An early interception set the Fighting Scots up at their own 43. From there, Wooster was able to advance into the red zone, though Denison's front answered by forcing a missed field goal attempt.

After a holding penalty put the Big Red deep in their own domain to start the second quarter, senior wideout Logan Yater was able to secure a 36-yard completion through defensive pass interference to jump start the drive. Facing fourth down in Wooster territory, the Big Red rolled the dice, turning to their trusty tailback, Blayton Reid, to keep their attack alive. The very next play, the Denison offense locked in, as senior receiver Jack Williams found a wide-open Yater in the endzone to put a bow on an 11-play drive. It was Williams' first passing touchdown of his career.

Denison's defense held up their end of the bargain on the next Wooster possession, as a misplayed slip screen led to a loss of nine on third down. After recovering their own fumble, the Fighting Scots decided to go for it on the Denison 26-yard line, but were unsuccessful. The Big Red offense quickly capitalized on this defensive stop in their next drive with a 74-yard touchdown drive that only took three and a half minutes.

With just over two minutes left in the half and a chance to cut into the Denison lead, the Fighting Scots quickly drove down the field, taking advantage of a couple of Big Red penalties along the way to touch paint before the first half came to a close. Heading into their respective locker rooms, Denison led Wooster 14-7 at the half.

After a three-and-out to open the second half, Denison's offense looked to its defense for a pick-up. With Wooster pushing inside the Denison ten, junior linebacker Nick Pellicciotta answered the call with a leaping interception for the Big Red.

Only three plays later, Denison extended their lead to 21-7, as sophomore quarterback Tyler Green followed up a 54-yard completion to Grayson Kerscher with a beautiful ball to Logan Yater for his second touchdown of the game.

The Denison defense forced another turnover on the following Wooster drive, as sophomore defensive back Cole Harris ripped the ball out for a fumble, which was then promptly recovered by senior captain Christian Lariviere.

Neither team scored for the remainder of the third and most of the fourth quarter, until a Green-to-Williams touchdown put the game out of reach for the Fighting Scots.

Denison forced a turnover-on-downs on Wooster's final attempt, allowing for QB kneels to take the clock to zeroes, securing the victory for the Big Red.
