PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Sept. 8) -- The Denison University women's soccer team concluded action at the Carnegie Mellon University Tartan Cup on Sunday with a hard-fought 1-1 draw with 20th ranked William Smith.
Denison moves its overall record to 2-1-1 after a productive weekend in the Keystone state. The tie pushes William Smith to 1-2-1 overall in 2024.
Both teams picked up their respective scores during the first half of play.
The Herons were able to get on the board first when Ava Brazie found the back of the net in the 21st minute of play. Brazie headed the ball past the Denison goalkeeper after a free kick from Ruth Hotaling the side of the 18-yard box.
A pair of first years helped the Big Red gain the equalizer with just five seconds remaining in the first half. A cross from the goal line inside the 18 by
Megan Mulvey to the middle of the six-yard box for a free header by
Lola Tirabassi netted a goal for Denison.
Neither team could push ahead during a scoreless second half. Denison held a slight 4-3 advantage in shots over the final 45 minutes as the two teams played to the 1-1 draw.
William Smith led in shots (9-5) and corner kicks (5-3) during the match.
Reily Brinley and
Kendall Sierens had two shots apiece to pace the Big Red.
Molly Noga finished with four saves during her 90 minutes of work in goal.
The Big Red returns to action next weekend when they hit the road for a of non-conference game. Denison faces Centre College in Danville, Ky. on Saturday, Sept. 14. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
