PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Sept. 7) --
Caroline Flynn and
Megan Mulvey both found the back of the net in the second half to lead the Denison women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Westminster College Saturday afternoon in action at the Tartan Cup in Pittsburgh. The annual two-day event is being hosted by Carnegie Mellon University.
The Big Red followed a similar script to their last victory over Capital, as they used a pair of second half scores to pick up the win following a scoreless first half.
Flynn took advantage of one-on-one opportunity and sent a low shot past the keeper into the back of the net for the game's first goal. The goal came in the 63rd minute of play.
Isabella Guzman set up the score with her first assist of the season.
Denison tacked on another goal nearly 10 minutes later.
Megan Mulvey scored for a second time this season when she put a shot past the Westminster keeper in the 73rd minute. The first-year player was set up and assisted by
Eliza Roach, who dribble down the goal line around a defender and sent a diagonal pass to Mulvey, who scored from the six-yard marker.
Mulvey finished with a match-high three shots.
Mara McGlone and
Kendall Sierens finished with two shots apiece.
Wynne Hague got the start, made two saves and recorded the shutout in goal.
The Big Red held an 11-4 advantage in shots (6-2 shots on goal). Denison put together a 6-2 margin in corner kicks.
Denison moves to 2-1 overall with the win. Westminster drops to 1-1 in 2024.
The Big Red wraps up play at the Tartan Cup on Sunday, Sept. 8 when they face 20th ranked William Smith College. The match is slated for a 12 p.m. start at CMU.
