Flynn scores as Big Red, Polar Bears play to 1-1 draw

GRANVILLE, Ohio (Sept. 24) – The Denison University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with visiting Ohio Northern University in a non-conference game Tuesday evening at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium.

Denison moves its record to 3-3-2 with the tie while Ohio Northern holds a 4-3-1 overall record.

The Big Red were back at home for the first time since Sept. 1. Denison played five-straight games away from Granville.

Denison came out with an early burst and it paid dividends as they scored first. A nice lead pass from sophomore Mara McGlone set up senior Caroline Flynn for a goal in the 17th minute. Flynn tracked down the pass on the left side and scored with a shot that skipped on the turf and tucked just inside the right post.  The goal was the second of the season for Flynn.

Flynn tried to add to Denison's lead in the 29th minute when a nice through pass from Isabella Guzman set up a sprinting Flynn just inside the 18-yard box. However, the Polar Bears goalie was able to read the play and make a diving save to deny Denison a second goal.

Junior goalkeeper Molly Noga was able to make three saves during the opening 45 minutes to allow Denison to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Polar Bears found the equalizer in the 79th minute. ONU gained a free kick chance from just inside midfield. Alyssa Beckett was able to find the back of the net with a header following a long free kick by Kylie Cabana just inside of midfield.

Ohio Northern put another shot on goal a few minutes later but the shot was turned away by Denison senior goalkeeper Wynne Hague. The save was one of four stops by Hague over the final 45 minutes.

The final few minutes were relatively uneventful as the match ended in a draw.

ONU edged Denison by an 11-9 margin in shots. Both teams recorded one corner kick.

Flynn finished with a team-high four shots for the Big Red.

The Big Red travels east on Route 70 into Pennsylvania for a non-conference match at Washington & Jefferson College on Friday, Sept. 27. Start time is slated for 6 p.m.
