ALLIANCE, Ohio (Sept. 21) -- The Denison Big Red women's soccer team fell 2-1 to the Mount Union Purple Raiders in a road matchup late Saturday night. Mount Union struck twice in the first half, and though Denison mounted a late comeback, it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.
The Purple Raiders opened the scoring with a swift attack down the right side. An overlap pass found Ella Dinwiddie just outside the 18-yard box, and with a quick touch to create space, she sent a low shot across the box and just out of reach of Denison keeper Wynne Hague. Only minutes later, Mount Union doubled their lead. After Hague made an initial save, the rebound fell to Mount Unions' Rylee Hutton at the top of the box, and she capitalized by placing a shot into the same corner as the first goal.
Despite trailing, the Big Red kept pushing and created several opportunities throughout the game. Denison produced 15 total shots but couldn't capitalize, with only five on target. In the final minutes, Denison found the goal they had been seeking. A through ball split the Mount Union defense, sending Maryn Zavislak and Mara McGlone into a race for the ball with the Purple Raiders' keeper. The scramble resulted in a loose ball, which McGlone quickly controlled, sending it back to the top of the box. There, Isabella Guzman took a one-touch shot that soared across the goal to the lower left corner. Though a Mount Union defender got a touch on it, the ball still found the back of the net, cutting the lead to 2-1.
The Big Red applied late pressure but ran out of time to complete the comeback. The match was a physical battle, with 17 fouls committed between both teams.
Denison will look to bounce back at home on September 24th when they take on Ohio Northern under the lights at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium at 7 p.m.
This will mark the first home match for Denison since Sept. 1. The Big Red has played its last five matches away from Granville.
