GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Denison University field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision on the road to host Gettysburg College in non-conference play Saturday afternoon.
All four goals came in the second half as the two teams played through a scoreless opening 30 minutes.
Sabrina Post opened the scoring with a goal late in the third. Post, who was assisted by Jillian Somers, tipped in a shot with just 46 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Gettysburg added to its lead early in the fourth quarter when Morgan Cherry found the back of the cage. Cherry scored from straight away off a corner opportunity to make it 2-0 just 2:24 into the final quarter.
Denison cut the deficit in half when
Emma Gebhart scored off a redirect.
Megan Edwards was credited with an assist on the Gebhart goal. Gebhart is the team leader with three goals this season.
Bella Bonazinga tacked on an insurance goal for Gettysburg to put things out of reach. Bonazinga's sixth goal of the season came off a penalty corner chance. The score stretched the lead to 3-1 with less than five minutes to play.
Gettysburg out-shot Denison by an 18-3 margin and held a 7-0 advantage in corners.
Athena Joannou made 12 saves in the goal for the Big Red.
Denison returns to action Sunday when they take on Randolph-Macon College at 11 a.m. in Virginia.
