GRANVILLE, Ohio (Sept. 1) – A pair of newcomers scored second half goals to guide the Denison University women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Capital University in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net during a competitive first half of play. The two teams finished with five shots apiece and three each coming on goal.
Following a near even first half of play, the Big Red took control of the action over the final 45 minutes. Denison out-shot Capital by an 11-2 margin in the second half. The Big Red put five shots on goal and that paid dividends in helping them earn their first victory of the season.
The first Denison goal came in the 74th minute of play when
Megan Mulvey was able to collect the corner kick from about six yards out and tuck the shot in the lower right corner of the net. Mulvey, a first-year from Reading, Mass., was assisted by
Kendall Sierens on the play.
Denison added to its lead six minutes later when
Maryn Zavislak picked up her first collegiate score. Zavislak collected a bad pass off a failed clear attempt by Capital and drilled a shot into the top left corner of the net. The shot came from just outside the 18-yard box on the right half of the field. The Zavislak goal came in the 80th minute of action.
The Big Red was able to finish off the shutout victory from there. Denison held a 16-8 advantage in shots (8-5 shots on goal) in the game.
Zavislak finished with a game-high four shots (three on goal). The defensive back line of
Kate Dalimonte,
Sarah Sollinger,
Reily Brinley and
Avery Butler helped Denison record its first shutout of the season.
Molly Noga finished with five saves during the 90 minutes of action in goal.
Denison (1-1) travels to Pittsburgh for the Carnegie Mellon Tartan cup on Sept. 7-8. The Big Red faces Westminster College on Saturday, Sept. 7.
