Softball rebounds with sweep at OWU

DELAWARE, Ohio (April 20, 2024) – Just two days after falling twice at Hiram College, the Denison University softball team was able to finish off the week in winning fashion with a sweep at Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday. The Big Red won 6-3 in game one and then 7-2 in game two.

Game 1 (Denison 6, Ohio Wesleyan 3):
  • Denison scored first on a two-run double to right center field by Annabelle Calderon in the top of the third inning.
  • After loading the bases with one out in the fourth inning, the Big Red got an RBI-single to left field by Jordyn Maurer before a two-out, two-run single through the left side by Madilyn Moffitt.
  • Down 5-0, OWU scored three runs in a bottom of the fifth inning that featured just one hit for the Battling Bishops but also saw both a passed ball and a wild pitch by the Big Red lead to a run.
  • After coming in to pitch in the previous inning, Moffitt left two runners in scoring position in the sixth inning before a two-out double again to right center by Calderon in the seventh inning was followed by an RBI-single to right field by Brooke Surbaugh.
  • That run was potentially important after OWU again got two runners into scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the seventh before Moffitt got a groundout back to herself to end it.
  • Moffit finished with 2.2 innings pitched allowing one hit, no runs and no walks to earn her third save of the season.
  • Surbaugh (6-6), meanwhile, made the start and finished with 4.1 innings pitched allowing four hits, three unearned runs, three walks and four strikeouts.
  • Offensively, Moffit was 3-for-4 while Calderon and Surbaugh were both 2-for-4 and Clara Wolff was 2-for-3.

Game 2 (Denison 7, Ohio Wesleyan 2):
  • A muffed throw, a wild pitch and a passed ball allowed Denison's leadoff hitter, Alessandra Groome, to reach third base in the first inning before Calderon opened the scoring for the second game in a row, this time with a big three-run home run to left center field.
  • Sydney Silverstein (7-3) left two runners in scoring position in the first inning and another in the second before pitching a 1-2-3 third inning.
  • Denison added two unearned runs in the top of the third inning while OWU got on the board with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • The Battling Bishops then added an RBI-double in the sixth inning to make it 5-2 before a two-run single up the middle by Leilah Ferrari in the seventh inning gave the Big Red some breathing room.
  • Silverstein pitched all seven innings allowing eight hits, two total runs, one earned run and two walks. It was her fifth complete game of the season.
  • Moffit (2-for-4) was the only Big Red player with more than one hit in game two.

Records:
  • Denison improves to 16-10 overall and 5-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
  • It was Senior Day for Ohio Wesleyan, which falls to 12-11-1 and 1-5.

Next Up: Denison will play in its third straight doubleheader on the road, this time in nonconference action at Earlham College starting at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, in Richmond, Indiana.
