RICHMOND, Ind. (April 25, 2024) – Playing in its final two nonconference games of the 2024 regular season, the Denison University softball team earned a pair of wins at Earlham College in what was also the first-ever meeting between the two teams. In the end, the Big Red took game one 1-0 behind a one-hit shutout from Brooke Surbaugh before winning 4-2 in game two.

Game 1 (Denison 1, Earlham 0)
  • Denison scored in the top of the third inning when a two-out walk by Indy Workman was followed by an RBI-triple to center field by Annabelle Calderon.
  • After getting a 6-4-3 double play to end the first inning, Surbaugh (7-6) tossed five consecutive 1-2-3 innings.
  • Then after a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh inning, Surbaugh got a lineout double play to second base to end the game.
  • In the end, it was a one-hitter for Surbaugh, who finished with her fourth shutout of the season and faced the minimum of 21 hitters.
  • There were only eight baserunners combined between the two teams in game one.

Game 2 (Denison 4, Earlham 2)
  • Calderon struck again with a two-out RBI-single to right field in the bottom of the first inning, but Earlham answered with a two-out walk and an RBI-double to left field in the bottom half.
  • Denison was able to retake the lead in the fifth inning as Brianna Gonzalez led off with a single to shortstop, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jordyn Maurer, stole third base and then scored on an RBI-double to left field by Alessandra Groome, who later scored herself on a double steal by the Big Red.
  • Earlham scored an unearned run on an errant throw by the Big Red to make it a one-run game in the bottom of the sixth inning, and then Calderon put a cap to her strong day with a two-out RBI single through the left side to make it a two-run game again in the seventh inning.
  • Sydney Silverstein (8-3) set the Quakers down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh and finished with a line of seven innings pitched allowing four hits, two total runs, one earned run and two walks.
  • Calderon was 2-for-4 with two RBI's, Groome was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Gonzalez was 2-for-3.
