GREENCASTLE, Ind. (April 16, 2024) – Led by a combined 13 goals from
Anna DeVuono,
Mary Martinson,
Jamie Epstein and
Josie Lucchesi, the Denison University women's lacrosse team defeated DePauw University by a final score of 19-4 to improve to 4-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference and setup a big matchup at Kenyon College this weekend.
Denison trailed 1-0 at the start before back-to-back goals by Martinson started a 7-0 Big Red run ending with another goal by Martinson and a goal by
Bridget Sheehy, both in the opening minute of the second quarter.
DeVuno's second goal of the first half was then followed by back-to-back goals by Epstein, her second and third goals of the first half, to give Denison's its largest lead of the half (10-8) with 6:44 left in the second period.
With eight of its first 10 goals of the game coming from three players, Denison saw Lucchesi score a man-down goal for the Big Red in the final two minutes of the second half and then score twice in the first five minutes of the third quarter to get the Big Red to a 10-goal lead (13-3).
DeVuono would score her second man-down goal of the game to make it 14-3 in the final two minutes of the third quarter and then added her fourth goal of the game during the fourth quarter.
Denison outshot DePauw 13-1 and won 5-for-6 draw controls to get off to a get start in the first quarter and then limited the Tigers to just one shot and one draw control again in each of the third and fourth quarters.
For the second time in its last three games, Denison set a new season-high in man-down goals, this time with four.
The Big Red also finished the game a perfect 12-for-12 on clear attempts and had 22 caused turnovers. Sheehy,
Addie Clift and
Grayson O'Marra each finished with three of those caused turnovers.
Sheehy (1 goal; 4 assists) dished out three first-half assists and finished with a career-high of four assists and a game-high of five points while Epstein (3 goals; 1 assist) matched DeVuono (4 goals) with four points.
DeVuono has scored at least four goals in three of the last four games while Epstein's numbers were good for a new career-high in both goals and points.
Both Martinson and Lucchesi would finish with a hat trick with three goals scored as well.
After not reaching the 10-win mark last season until the NCAA Tournament, Denison is already 10-4 overall this season as it extended its current winning streak to nine-straight games heading into its biggest conference matchup of the year. In addition, Denison is now 12-0 all-time against DePauw (6-5 overall, 1-2 NCAC) since the Tigers began playing in 2013.
Denison and Kenyon will square off starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, in Gambier, Ohio.
