GAMBIER, Ohio (April 20, 2024) – The Denison University women's lacrosse team grinded out a 13-9 victory at Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon.
Denison scored the final two goals of the first quarter by
Maddie Morrell (3:38) and
Josie Lucchesi (1:35) to take a 4-2 lead after the opening period, and then goals by Morrell (10:11) and
Grayson O'Marra (9:58) made it 6-3 Big Red in the second quarter.
Kenyon scored three goals in a row to tie it with one minute left before halftime, but Denison was able to retake the lead with a goal by
Mary Martinson assisted by
Bridget Sheehy with 33 seconds left in the second quarter.
The first two goals of the third quarter went to
Merrill Rollhaus (14:41) and Lucchesi (12:47) to get it back to a three-point Big Red lead (9-6).
Kenyon would never get closer than within two of the Big Red the rest of the way as goals by Rollhaus (2:12) and Morrell (1:04) in the fourth quarter finished off the victory.
Lucchesi (3 goals; 1 assist) and Sheehy (1 goals; 3 assists) both led the Big Red with four points while Morrell finished with three goals and Rollhaus and O'Marra both had two goals.
Mary Daniel finished with a game-high four groundballs and led the way with five draw controls while Martinson had four draw controls and Rollhaus had three. In addition, Daniel, Martinson and Rollhaus each finished with two caused turnovers.
Denison improves to 11-4 overall and 5-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while also earning its 10th win in a row. Kenyon, meanwhile, falls to 5-7 and 1-3.
Denison will have a chance to win the NCAC Championship in its regular-season finale next weekend as the Big Red host Ohio Wesleyan University (12-2 overall, 4-0 NCAC) starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 27. It will also be Senior Day for the Big Red.
