GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 13, 2024) – During a game that will be remembered by Big Red fans and alumni for years to come, the Denison University women's lacrosse team successfully defended its home field against Oberlin College with a 19-goal victory, 23-4, over the Yeowomen during a day that also featured a special celebration and dedication ceremony for the new Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium.
The Big Red were led by
Maddie Morrell with four goals, all in the first quarter, while
Ashley Viglione had three goals for the second time this season and
Josie Lucchesi,
Jane Lukens and
Anna DeVuono each scored twice. Lukens also added an assist and has now scored two goals in three of Denison's last four games.
Morrell and Lucchesi both scored twice in the first 2:10 of the game before Morrell scored her third goal in the opening three minutes.
Morrell's fourth goal seven minutes in made it an 8-0 Denison lead before Oberlin got on the board with 7:26 left in the first quarter.
That would proceed a 9-0 Denison run that saw the Big Red lead by 10 (11-1) at the end of the first quarter before ultimately leading 17-1 at halftime.
After getting into their attacking side just five times during the first quarter, the Yeowomen were unable to get off a shot attempt during a suffocating second quarter by the Big Red midfield press and defense and were held to zero groundballs and just one clear attempt in the period.
In total, Denison limited Oberlin to just nine shot attempts and a 6-for-16 clear rate while winning the draw controls 22-7 and converting on 8-of-11 free position shots. Morrell was 2-for-2 on free position shots where six other Big Red players converted on one free position shot.
In addition to scoring a season-high in goals, Denison finished with a season-high in draw controls, free-position goals and man-up goals (5).
Morrell and
Mary Daniel tied for the team lead with three groundballs while
Kate Coward had two groundballs to go along with two caused turnovers.
Merrill Rollhaus finished with five draw controls while Daniel,
Mary Martinson and
Sydney Lavin each added three.
The game also featured the first-career goals for freshmen
Lizzie Israel (10:06 in 3rd quarter),
Mairead Westover (8:33 in 4th quarter) and
Anna Nuckols (0:33 in 4th quarter).
In addition to improving to 9-4 overall and 3-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference with eight straight wins under its belt, Denison is now 6-0 when playing at the new Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium this season and is now 29-0 against Oberlin (4-10, 0-3) since 1999.
Next week will see the Big Red play at DePauw University starting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, before a big road game at Kenyon College looms on Saturday, April 20 (1 p.m.).
