GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 10, 2023) – The Denison University women's lacrosse team played in its first-ever North Coast Athletic Conference game inside Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium on Wednesday night and came away with a 19-10 victory over the College of Wooster.
The Big Red were led in scoring by
Josie Lucchesi, who finished with five goals for the fourth time as a senior, while
Maddie Morrell (3 goals; 2 assists) also finished with five points.
Anna DeVuono scored four goals and has been on a tear with nine goals over the last two games.
Lucchesi scored back-to-back goals starting with 12:18 on the clock in the first quarter, and then her third goal wrapped up a 4-0 Denison run with 2:03 left in the opening period to make it a 5-1 Big Red lead.
The deciding run was a 6-0 stretch to end the second quarter that featured two more goals for Lucchesi and ended with a man-down goal by
Sydney Lavin with just one second on the clock to make it 11-3. Lavin has now scored in back-to-back games after netting her first-career goal last time out at Wittenberg University.
The biggest statistical difference came as Denison finished 7-for-10 on free position shots while Wooster was just 0-for-3. Lucchesi was 2-for-2 on free position shots while
Jane Lukens was 2-for-3.
Denison also recorded three man-down goals for the first time since March 31, 2018, in a 21-9 home win over Allegheny College.
Grace Schlossberg was a menace both on defense and in leading to successful clears as she finished with four caused turnovers and three groundballs.
On the draw control,
Mary Daniel was explosive at knifing in for the ball and finished with seven draw controls.
Merrill Rollhaus had a strong all-around game with three draw controls, three caused turnovers, three groundballs and one goal.
It was the first conference game of the season for Wooster (8-2 overall, 0-1 NCAC), but it was Denison (8-4, 2-0) that extended its winning streak to seven straight games and improved to 5-0 at home while the Fighting Scots saw their four-game win streak come to an end and lost for the first time on the road this season (4-1). In addition, it was Denison's 13th win in a row against Wooster dating back to the 2015 NCAC Tournament semifinals, and was its 19th win in the last 20 meetings against the Fighting Scots.
Next up, Saturday, April 13, will be a very special day for the Big Red as they host Oberlin College (2 p.m.) for Alumni Day. The festivities will include a special dedication ceremony for the New Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium both before the game and at halftime.
