GRANVILLE, Ohio (March 27, 2024) – Playing in its final game before the start of North Coast Athletic Conference action this weekend, the now No. 4 nationally-ranked Denison University baseball team scored a combined 10 runs in its final three innings offensively and defeated Muskingum University by a score of 12-2 at the Big Red Baseball Field on Wednesday evening.
It was the first meeting between Denison and Muskingum since 2020 and was the eighth-straight win in the series for the Big Red.
Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Denison started the inning with back-to-back walks by
Colin Ravin and
Alex Vasquez before a bunt single by
Carson Herman loaded the bases.
Jake Blozy followed with an RBI-walk before an RBI-single through the left side by
Eric Colaco made it 4-2.
Then after a 1-2-3 top of the seventh inning by
Manny Nager (1-1), Denison put up a five-spot in the bottom half as
Max Fishbein and Ravin both singled to get the inning started. Then after a hit by pitch by Herman to load the bases with one out, Blozy was also hit by a pitch to record his second RBI in as many innings before Colaco singled down the third base line to score both Ravin and Herman. Two batters later, a two-run single to left field by
Jake Welsch made it 9-2 Big Red.
Liam Eliot threw a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the eighth before Denison loaded the bases with less than two outs for the third inning in a row in the bottom half.
Erik Sundgren led it off with a walk, Ravin singled to center field, and
Kuyper Lashutka drew another hit by pitch, the third hit by pitch drawn by the Big Red in two innings, all before Herman hit an RBI-single to center,
Jack Steel hit an RBI-single up the middle, and Colao hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
Colaco finished 3-for-5 with four RBI's while
Cade Nowik was 3-for-5 as well, Ravin was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two walks, Herman was 2-for-3, and Welsch finished with three RBI's.
Nager, Eliot and
Sam Larson combined to hold Muskingum to just one hit, no runs and no walks over the final 3.2 innings of the game.
With its 10th win in a row entering NCAC action, Denison is now 17-2 overall while Muskingum (11-8) sees its five-game winning streak, which had included a win over two NCAC teams, Wittenberg University and Ohio Wesleyan University, come to an end.
Denison will hit the road to open up NCAC action as the Big Red travel to Crawfordsville, Indiana, to take on Wabash College in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 30. During its conference opener at home last season, Denison defeated Wabash 10-4 in game one and 11-1 in seven innings in game two.
