GRANVILLE, Ohio (March 25, 2024) – The Denison University women's lacrosse team welcomed George Fox University in from Oregon to Ohio on Monday and in the end, the Big Red were victorious 22-5 over the Bruins inside Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium.
In what was the first-ever meeting between the two teams, Denison (4-4 overall) outscored George Fox (5-2) 8-1 in the first quarter and 6-1 in the second to lead 14-2 at halftime.
After the score was 1-1 just over a minute in, the Big Red went on an 11-0 run featuring three goals apiece by
Josie Lucchesi and
Maddie Morrell and two by
Ashley Viglione.
As a team, Denison finished with a season-high in both total shot attempts (41) and shots on goal (33) and had a season-low with six turnovers.
The Big Red defense also limited the Bruins to just 12 shots for the game to go along with a 6-for-15 conversation rate on clear attempts.
Morrell would finish with five points (4 goals; 1 assist) while Lucchesi had four (3 goals; 1 assist) and was matched by Viglione with three goals.
Addie Clift and
Lucy Cavanaugh both scored twice while
Bridget Sheehy dished out two assists.
Audrey Hughes got the start while
Julianne Henigan and
Cate Dannahey all saw action in goal for the third game in a row.
George Fox is coming off a 2023 season in which it hosted the inaugural Northwest Conference Tournament, defeated fourth-seeded Whitworth and third-seeded Willamette to claim the first NWC Tournament title, and received a first-round bye before falling to Pomona Pitzer in the second round in the NCAA Tournament and finishing the year with an impressive 17-2 record.
Denison's four-game homestand will continue with the University of Mount Union starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27. Earlier this season, the Purple Raiders made the trip to Oregon to play at George Fox and came out on top by a final score of 16-14.
