GRANVILLE, Ohio (March 27, 2024) – The Denison University women's lacrosse team earned its fourth win in a row and its third straight win at home as the Big Red were victorious by 15, 21-6, over the University of Mount Union on Wednesday night inside Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium.
It was the first meeting between Denison (5-4 overall) and Mount Union (5-3) since a 15-7 road win for the Big Red during the 2017 season.
Denison led 6-0 to start in that matchup, and this time around the Big Red outscored the Purple Raiders 4-0 in the first quarter behind a first-period hat trick from
Josie Lucchesi.
After the first goal for Mount Union in the second quarter, back-to-back goals by
Bridget Sheehy and a goal by
Ana Ortiz DeRosa made it 7-1 Big Red with 5:36 left before halftime, and then Ortiz DeRosa added two more goals to make it 9-2 in the final 30 seconds of the first half.
Sheehy quickly became the third Big Red player to net a hat trick as she scored less than a minute into the third quarter and started an 8-0 Denison run featuring two more goals from Lucchesi and a pair of goals by
Anna DeVuono. The final goal of that run came from
Addie Clift and made it 17-3 Big Red less than a minute into the fourth quarter.
The final period would also see
Madison Goldstein and
Maddie Van Slyke score while
Caroline Brooks netted a pair of goals as well.
Lucchesi (5 goals; 1 assist) finished with five goals for the second time in her last three games while the three goals by Ortiz DeRosa were good for her first-career hat trick.
Merrill Rollhaus showed off her speed and athleticism on the draw controls as she finished with six and added three caused turnovers and two groundballs.
Sheehy would add three draw controls and two caused turnovers while
Maddie Morrell had three groundballs and two caused turnovers;
Mary Daniel had three draw controls and three groundballs; and
Grayson O'Marra had two draw controls, two caused turnovers and two groundballs.
Denison outshot Mount Union 44-10 for the game and allowed only eight shots on goal. The Big Red also limited the Raiders to just nine successful clears on 22 attempts while going a perfect 14-for-14 themselves, finishing with 10 more draw controls (19-9), and doubling them up in groundballs (22-11).
Denison's four-game homestand will conclude with a tough matchup against No. 17 nationally-ranked Christopher Newport University starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 30. In their meeting last season in Virginia, Denison led 7-3 in the second quarter before a 13-0 CNU run sent the Captains to a 16-7 victory.
