No. 6 Big Red sweep home opener over Calvin

Rettig, Lemke both improve to 4-0 on the mound

GRANVILLE, Ohio (March 22, 2024) – The No. 6 Denison University baseball team played at home for the first time during the 2024 season and earned a doubleheader sweep over Calvin University on Saturday. In the end, the Big Red picked up wins of 9-5 and 12-2 against the Knights.

Game 1 (No. 6 Denison 9, Calvin 5):
  • Denison led 8-0 to start after scoring three runs in the bottom of the second, four in the bottom of the third and one in the fourth.
  • The bottom of the second inning started with a single through the left side by Cade Nowik, a walk by Jack Lutte and a hit by pitch by Jack Steel to load the bases. Three straight RBI's followed as Jake Blozy singled to right center to score Nowik before a fielder's choice to shortstop by Alex Vasquez scored Lutte and a sacrifice bunt by Owen Wilson brought home Steel.
  • Will Rettig faced the minimum through four innings and improved to 4-0 on the season. He finished with six innings pitched allowing four hits, one run and two walks while striking out just one batter but forcing Calvin to keep the ball on the ground to the tune of 11 groundouts.
  • In the top of the seventh, however, after Rettig was finished for the day, the Calvin bats came alive with four straight hits to start the inning, all before a two-out, two-run single to cut Denison's lead to just 8-5.
  • Fortunately, George Viebrock righted the ship to pick up the two-inning save while the Big Red tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a leadoff single through the left side by Blozy, a sacrifice bunt by Carson Herman and an RBI-single through the right side by Wilson. It was Vieborck's 10th save of his career.
  • Eric Colaco finished 4-for-5 with a triple while Blozy was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI's and Vasquez finished with three RBI's.

Game 2 (No. 6 Denison 12, Calvin 2):
  • The Knights scored in the top of the first but were caught stealing at home to end the inning, and then the Big Red got an RBI-groundout by Jake Welsch and a two-out RBI-single to short by Nowik to take back lead in the bottom half.
  • Calvin tied it at 2-2 in the top of the third inning before the bottom half started with a leadoff triple to left center field by Colaco, his second triple of the day, to kick off a five-run, six-hit inning for Denison.
  • Peter Lemke (4-0) pitched six innings allowing six hits, two runs, one walk and five strikeouts.
  • Jaden Cole and Nate Dinges pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings before Denison finished the game one inning early with a three-run bottom of the eighth ending with an RBI-single by Erik Sundgren to score Blozy.
  • Sundren was 3-for-5 with three RBI's while Nowik was 3-for-4 and Blozy finished with three RBI's and three runs scored.

Records:
  • In addition to improving to 15-2 on the season, No. 6 Denison is now 6-0 all-time against Calvin, which fell to .500 on the year at 9-9.
