GRANVILLE, Ohio (March 20, 2024) – The Denison University women's lacrosse team rolled to a 22-9 victory over Capital University in its first-ever game inside the new Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium on Wednesday evening.
It was also Denison's (3-4 overall) first-ever game against Capital (5-3) as the Big Red outscored the Comets 8-1 in the first quarter and led 11-1 with 12:47 left in the second quarter.
Josie Lucchesi scored three goals and had two assists to that point in the game while
Maddie Morrell also had three goals.
In the end, Lucchesi finished with five goals and seven points, matching her career-high in both categories, while Morrell later added two assists to tie her career-high with five points.
Ashley Viglione finished with two goals and one assist while
Bridget Sheehy and
Anna DeVuono scored twice as well and
Jane Lukens contributed with one goal and two assists.
Mary Daniel finished with eight draw controls and scored her first goal since her freshman season.
Merrill Rollhaus finished with five draw controls and added a goal and an assist.
Both Daniel and
Courtney Wolfington also had two caused turnovers while both Daniel and
Liz Hinton led the way with three groundballs.
In the fourth quarter, freshman
Sophie Davenport and sophomore
Jamie Epstein both scored their first-career goals.
Capital, which has been ranked as high as No. 19 this season according to USA Lacrosse Magazine, was led by junior midfielder and Second Team All-American Grace Osborn with five goals and six points. Osborn currently has the second-most career goals in Capital history. Osborn's efforts have helped Capital claim the OAC Championship and a berth into the NCAA Tournament each of the past two seasons. Both of those seasons, Osborn and the Comets bowed out of the NCAA Tournament in the second round.
Wednesday's matchup was just the start of a four-game homestand for the Big Red, who on Monday, March 25, will welcome in George Fox University from Oregon starting at 5 p.m.
