ADRIAN, Mich. (March 17, 2024) – The No. 6 Denison University baseball team finished up its run at the Adrian Tournament with a 3-0 record after grinding out a 5-3 win over the hosts from Adrian College on a cold Sunday afternoon in Michigan.
Denison scored first in the second inning when singles by
Owen Wilson and
Colin Ravin, the first two hits of the game for either team, were followed by an errant throw by the Bulldogs' shortstop, allowing both runners to score with two outs.
Adrian got the two runs back in the bottom half of the second when three straight singles to start the inning were ultimately followed by a two-out, two-run single up the middle.
The Big Red took the lead again in the third inning when a two-out walk by
Jake Welsch was followed by an RBI-triple to right center field by
Cade Nowik.
Denison's fourth two-out run of the game came in the seventh inning when a leadoff error at second base was followed by a sacrifice bunt and a groundout to get
Erik Sundgren to third base before an RBI-single to left field by
Eric Colaco.
That run would prove to be crucial as Adrian responded with a leadoff home run to center in the bottom half of the seventh.
The final run of the game came as
Jack Lutte led off the eighth inning with a double to left field and then two batters later, scored on a triple to right field by Welsch. It was Denison's second run-scoring triple in the game.
Helping lead the Big Red to the low-scoring victory was the combination of
George Viebrock (2-0),
Manny Nager, and
Jack Rollo, the latter of which earned his first-career save as a freshman.
Viebrock earned the start and allowed seven hits, two runs and zero walks while striking out nine in five innings. Viebrock also finished with two pickoffs in the contest while his catcher, Ravin, threw out both would-be base stealers against him.
Nager allowed the solo home run but finished with just one hit and no walks allowed in two innings while striking out three, and then Rollo pitched the final two innings allowing two hits, no runs and no walks.
Denison improves to 10 games above .500 (12-2) with the win while Adrian falls to 7-6.
