CLEARWATER, Fla. (March 14, 2024) – The No. 25 Denison University women's lacrosse team finished off its Spring Break trip with an 18-10 win over the St. Mary's College of Maryland in a neutral-site matchup on Thursday night at Phillip Jones Field in Clearwater, Florida.
Denison led 6-0 after the first quarter and 7-0 after the third goal of the game by
Merrill Rollhaus three minutes into the second quarter. The Big Red then scored four straight goals to end the second quarter and lead 13-4.
Denison outshot St. Mary's 13-2 in the first quarter and 23-8 in the first half and started the game a perfect 12-for-12 on clear attempts until midway through the third quarter.
In addition, the Big Red won five of seven draw controls in the first quarter and were 4-for-5 on free position shots in the first half.
Rollhaus (3 goals; 2 assists) led the Big Red with five points and added four draw controls, two caused turnovers and two groundballs.
Josie Lucchesi (3 goals; 1 assist) had four points and was 2-for-2 on free position shots while
Maddie Morrell matched both Rollhaus and Lucchesi with three goals as well.
Bridget Sheehy led the way with five draw controls and also had two groundballs.
It was the second year in a row Denison (2-4 overall) and St. Mary's (4-4) have met up during Spring Break after the Big Red won 16-9 in Colorado last season. Earlier this week, St. Mary's, which has made the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons and already has a top-25 win over Messiah (13-10) under its belt this season, had its four-game winning streak snapped in a 20-10 defeat against No. 5 Franklin and Marshall College in Florida on Tuesday.
Denison will return to action for its home opener and its first game at the new Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium starting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, against Capital University.
