PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (March 11, 2024) – The No. 7 nationally-ranked Denison University baseball team continued its run at the Snowbird Classic with a 5-1 win over the Stevens Institute of Technology on Monday.
A two-out double down the right field line was followed by an RBI-single to left field to get Stevens on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning,
In the third inning, Denison quickly took the lead as the inning began with back-to-back doubles down the left field line by
Alex Vasquez and
Eric Colaco to tie the game, and then two batters later
Noah Leib singled to left field to score Colaco and put the Big Red in front 2-1.
Colaco added an RBI-single with a two-out knock to left field in the fourth inning, and then in the fifth inning
Jake Welsch doubled down the left field line with one out, stole third and then scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by
Cade Nowik to make it 4-1.
After coming in to pitch with two runners on base with just one out in the bottom of the sixth inning,
Nate Dinges ultimately left two runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Denison's final run of the game, meanwhile, came after a hit by pitch by Leib, a single through the left side by Welsch and a bunt single by Nowik loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the seventh. Then with one out, a sacrifice fly to left field by
Jake Blozy scored Leib to make it 5-1 Big Red.
Colaco led the Big Red with a 3-for-4 effort featuring two RBI's while Welsch was 2-for-5 and Vasquez was 1-for-2 with two walks.
Jack Rollo (1-0) earned the win after tossing 5.1 innings allowing five hits, one run, two walks and two strikeouts to start the game on the mound.
Denison improves to 8-2 with the win while Stevens falls to 6-4. The Ducks have now lost four straight after starting the year 6-0.
