LYNCHBURG, Va. (March 10, 2024) – In a rematch of their "Sweet 16" matchup last season during the third round of the NCAA Tournament, a 14-8 loss at home for the Big Red, the No. 19 Denison University men's lacrosse team this time fell 13-4 at the No. 13-ranked University of Lynchburg on Sunday.
Nick Vance scored the first goal of the game two and a half minutes in before Lynchburg scored the next four goals and led 4-2 after the first quarter.
Then after a goal by
Tommy Quinson assisted on by Vance made it a 4-3 Denison deficit two minutes into the second quarter, the Hornets scored five straight goals in the final nine and a half minutes of the period to enter halftime with a big 9-3 lead.
Lynchburg then kept Denison off the scoreboard in the third quarter while extending its scoring run to 8-0 and its lead to 12-3. Lynchburg finished with 54 shots and was averaging over a shot per minute entering the fourth quarter.
Tyler Hadley, who was recognized as a preseason All-American by the USILA, finished with 14 saves and a .778 save percentage in what was his best game of the season so far for the Hornets while
Andrew Albert finished with a career-high 13 saves for the Big Red.
In addition to leading Denison with two points, Vance (1 goal, 1 assist) recorded four groundballs and was joined by
Jack Sload also with four while faceoff man
Grant Larson had five.
Denison falls to below .500 at 2-3 on the season while Lynchburg improves to 2-2. In the 2023 season, the Hornets finished with a 15-7 record and were 8-1 in the ODAC while making it to the conference championship for the ninth year in a row. The Hornets also retained their top-13 point scorers and 421 of their 463 points from 2023.
Next up for the Big Red will be a third straight road game against a ranked opponent as the Big Red travel to No. 7 Gettysburg College for a 1 p.m. matchup on Saturday, March 16.
