GRANVILLE, Ohio (February 14, 2024) – The Denison University women's basketball team outscored Hiram College 27-11 in the third quarter to pull away and hand the Terriers a 67-41 defeat during what was the final road game of the regular season for the Big Red on Wednesday evening.
Denison (18-6 overall, 9-4 North Coast Athletic Conference) earned its 10th road win of the season (10-2), its most road victories in one season since the 2010-11 season when the Big Red went 12-0 on the road and were 28-0 overall. The Big Red also earned their first season sweep over Hiram (8-16, 3-10) in the last three seasons after winning by five points (62-57) in their previous meeting this year at Denison (Jan. 24).
Abby Cooch scored 16 points on 50 percent (6-12) shooting from the field and a 4-for-7 mark from three.
Abigail Westmeyer and
Morgan Kress both added 12 points while Westmeyer also led the Big Red with six rebounds and Kress added three blocks.
A 3-pointer by Cooch in the final seconds of the first half capped a 4-for-5 shooting mark from three for the Big Red in the second quarter as Denison took a 10-point lead (31-21) at halftime.
Then after a pair of free throws by Kress made it a 26-point game (58-32) at the end of the third quarter, Denison started off the fourth quarter with three straight baskets by
Izzy Arguelles,
Amy Barry and
Ava Warcaba before a 3-pointer by
Jess Zittel made it a 35-point game (67-32) with four and a half minutes remaining.
Denison shot 44.1 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from three while sinking seven 3-pointers, and kept Hiram to only 28.6 percent shooting overall and 23.1 percent (3-13) shooting from three. The Big Red also outrebounded the Terriers by 13 (47-34).
Next up, Denison's regular-season finale and Senior Day will see the Big Red host Oberlin College for a 2 p.m. tipoff on Saturday, February 17.
