GRANVILLE, Ohio (Nov. 20) – The Denison University men's basketball team coasted to a convincing 69-44 win over visiting Capital University in non-conference play Wednesday evening at Livingston Gymnasium.
Denison got the better of the visiting Comets to move to 3-0 on the season. The visitors, now 2-1 overall, fall for the first time in 2024-25.
Both teams were slow out of the gates offensively. The Big Red built a lead midway through the first half when they used six-straight points to push in front by a 15-10 margin following consecutive baskets by
Ricky Radtke.
The Big Red continued to build upon their lead for the remainder of the half. Consecutive field goals from
Jack Steinbach and Radtke stretched the lead to nine points (23-14) at the 3:21 mark. A few minutes later, Steinbach nailed a three-point field goal to push the lead into double digits at 26-16 with 1:59 left in the half.
Denison continued its strong finish to the half when
Cameron Smith nailed a triple just before the halftime horn. Smith's trey gave Denison a 29-18 advantage at halftime.
The Big Red found their stride offensively in the second half and put the game out of reach in the early minutes. Following an opening quarter score by Capital, Denison ripped off six-straight points including a
Cameron Smith layup, to put the score at 35-20 at the 16:30 mark.
Five-straight points by
Aidan King pushed the lead to 41-22 two-plus minutes later.
Nick Heath extended the Big Red advantage to 20 points by draining a three-point field goal at the 12:43 mark.
Kellon Smith converted back-to-back field goals to further enhance the Denison following the under eight media timeout. The scores made the Denison lead 56-33 with 7:37 left. Denison led by at least 20 points for the rest of the way.
Radtke finished with a double double effort in the win. Radtke tallied team highs with 13 points and 10 rebounds. King poured in 11 points off the bench.
Kellon Smith chipped in eight points, three assists and two steals.
Denison held Capital to 44 points which included just 16 made field goals and 20 turnovers.
Cameron Smith had four steals while Steinbach added three swipes.
