SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (Oct. 5) –
Mara McGlone scored in the final minute to lift the Denison University women's soccer team to a dramatic 2-1 victory over Wittenberg University in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams Saturday evening at Edwards-Maurer Stadium.
The win is the third-straight for Denison. The Big Red improve to 6-3-2 overall. Wittenberg drops to 2-4-3 overall.
The two teams played through a relatively uneventful first half. The host Tigers held a slight 4-3 edge in shots during the opening 45 minutes of play.
Wittenberg opened the scoring with a Caroline Stupp goal in the 57th minute of play. The Tigers seemed poised to make that goal hold up as they carried that lead for 20+ minutes.
However, the Big Red would find the equalizer in the 84th minute of play. For the second-straight game,
Avery Butler found the back of the net.
Caroline Flynn was able to record the assist on Butler's game-tying score.
Denison could have just been content to earn the draw after fighting back to score the equalizer. Howver, the Big Red set its sights on securing the outright victory. Following a foul on Wittenberg with around a minute to play,
Reily Brinley set a perfect free kick into the box, which McGlone was able to break free and head into the left side of the net. McGlone's second goal of the season came with around 50 seconds to play.
The Big Red held an 11-7 advantage in shots. Wittenberg recorded all three corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper
Wynne Hague picked up the victory in goal. Hague made six saves over 90 minutes.
Denison travels to Kenyon College on Friday, Oct. 11. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Gambier.
