WOOSTER, Ohio (Oct. 30) – A pair of first half goals guided the 10th ranked Denison University men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory at Wooster College in North Coast Athletic Conference play Wednesday afternoon.
The win improves Denison to 11-1-4 overall and 6-0-1 in conference play. The victory also sets up a showdown with Ohio Wesleyan in Saturday's regular season finale that will determine the NCAC regular season champion and the top seed for the 2024 NCAC Tournament. The Big Red and the Battling Bishops will both enter Saturday's game with 19 points. Denison and OWU will face off at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium at 3:30 p.m.
"Today was a really good win," said fifth-year head coach
Brandon Bianco. "I'm proud of these guys. We got two big goals when we needed them and got another shutout. We'll be excited for Saturday."
Denison struck twice in a 10-minute span during the first half. That was all the scoring they needed to pick up another conference victory.
The Big Red opened the scoring in the 16th minute when junior
Zarius Eusebe headed a long cross from sophomore
Justin Crow into the back of the net. The goal was the fourth of the season for Eusebe.
Denison kept up the persistent pressure and scored again just nine minutes later. This time a perfectly executed corner kick gave them a second goal. Junior defender
Henri Heyes was able to head one in from near the back post. The corner kick was delivered by junior
Kameron Kist, who notches his team-leading fifth assist of the season. The goal was the second of the season for Heyes.
The visitors outpaced Wooster by an 11-4 margin in shots during the opening 45 minutes. Both teams put five shots up during a scoreless second half of play.
For the game, Denison had a 16-9 advantage in shots and a 7-4 lead in shots on goal. Wooster held a 6-4 edge over Denison in corner kick chances.
Heyes, Crow and
Kameron Kist each tallied three shots during a balanced offensive display for Denison.
The shutout is the 12th clean sheet of the season for the Big Red. Senior goalkeeper
Tommy Prokos made four saves over the 90 minutes.
