Desmond’s hat trick powers Field Hockey to fifth-straight win


RICHMOND, Ind. (Oct. 26) – Reilly Desmond registered her first career hat trick to lead the Denison University field hockey team to a 5-0 shutout victory at Earlham College in a North Coast Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon in Indiana. 
 
The Big Red extends its winning streak to five-straight games with the victory over the Quakers. Denison holds an 8-1 record in NCAC play and a 9-6 mark overall. Earlham falls to 1-8 in the league and 1-14 overall. 

Following a scoreless first quarter in which Earlham out-shot Denison by a 4-2 margin, the Big Red picked things up in the second quarter. 
 
Desmond opened the scoring with an unassisted goal right around five minutes into the second quarter. The Big Red added to its lead when Tabitha Chandler scored with about five minutes left before halftime. The goal is the first of the season for Chandler. 
 
The Big Red tacked on a pair of goals in the third quarter to swell their lead to four. Desmond accounted for both goals. Her second goal of the game came 4:30 into the third quarter. She later added a score with around three minutes remaining in the quarter. 
 
Helen Breen tallied a fourth quarter score to help Denison advance its lead to 5-0. Breen's goal was assisted by Claire Willoughby
 
Athena Joannou started and picked up the win for Denison. Joannou made a pair of saves for the Big Red. 

Up Next: Denison wraps up the regular season with Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 2. The Big Red will host Washington & Jefferson College at Deeds Field – Piper Stadium at 11 a.m.
